TANNOURINE, Lebanon
– Popular Colombian singer Shakira paid a visit to the village in Lebanon where her paternal grandmother was born. During her visit to Tannourine in Lebanon’s mountainous north, the 41-year-old pop star greeted the locals in Arabic, expressing her happiness at being there. Under tight security, Shakira, accompanied by local officials, also took the opportunity to visit a nature reserve that is home to Lebanon’s national emblem, cedar trees. She even planted two saplings and a small patch of the reserve was named “Shakira Mubarak” in honor of one of the singer’s family names, according to the mayor of Tannourine, Bahaa Harb.

The previous evening, Shakira kicked off the Cedars International Festival in Lebanon with a concert that was expected to attract 13,000 people. The concert took place at the ancient cedars of Lebanon, providing a stunning mountaintop backdrop. Shakira, who has Lebanese and Colombian heritage, expressed her pride in performing in the land of her grandparents, saying, “Lubnaaan! It’s amazing to be in this magical setting, it’s surreal, thank you so much for having me tonight.” The singer performed songs from her latest album, El Dorado, as well as her classic hits, including Estoy Aqui and Whenever, Wherever. She even showcased her belly dancing skills.

The Shakira concert marked the beginning of the Cedars International Festival, an annual music festival held in Lebanon during the summer. This event is just one of the many music festivals hosted by the country, attracting music lovers from all over the world.
